Nail with lines

Posted on April 12, 2026April 20, 2026 by Admin

Lines on nails are pretty common, and they can mean different things depending on how they look. Here’s a clear breakdown so you can figure out what you’re seeing:

🟢 Vertical lines (most common)

These run from the base of the nail to the tip.

Usually harmless, and often linked to:

  • Aging
  • Mild dehydration of nails
  • Minor nutrient gaps (like iron or B vitamins)

👉 What to do:
Keep nails moisturized, eat a balanced diet, and stay hydrated.

🟡 Horizontal lines (more serious)

These go across the nail from side to side and are called Beau’s lines.

Possible causes:

  • Recent illness or high fever
  • Physical stress or trauma
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Certain medical conditions

👉 If you notice deep or multiple lines, it’s worth checking with a doctor.

⚪ White lines or spots

Often harmless and caused by:

  • Minor nail injuries
  • Zinc deficiency (sometimes)

⚫ Dark lines (brown or black)

Could be:

  • A mole or pigmentation
  • Injury

⚠️ But in rare cases, it may signal Subungual melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

👉 Get it checked if:

  • The line is new and dark
  • It’s widening or changing
  • It appears on only one nail

When to see a doctor

  • Lines appear suddenly
  • Multiple nails are affected
  • You have other symptoms (fatigue, weakness, illness)

If you want, you can describe your nail (color, direction, number of lines), and I’ll help you narrow it down more precisely.
