Origin of coffee and its varieties

Posted on April 20, 2026 by Admin

☕ Origin of coffee

Coffee comes from the roasted seeds (beans) of plants in the genus Coffea. Its story begins in East Africa, most famously in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is widely regarded as the birthplace of coffee. According to tradition, coffee was discovered when a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats becoming unusually energetic after eating red berries from a wild shrub.

From Ethiopia, coffee spread:

  • 🌍 To the Arabian Peninsula (especially Yemen) in the 15th century
  • ☕ Through the Islamic world, where it became popular in Sufi monasteries
  • 🌏 Then to Europe in the 1600s, where coffeehouses became cultural hubs
  • 🌎 Later to the Americas and other coffee-growing regions through colonial trade

🌱 Main species of coffee plants

Almost all coffee consumed today comes from two main species:

1) Arabica coffee

Coffea arabica

  • 🌱 Grows at high altitudes (cool climates)
  • ☕ Smooth, mild, aromatic flavor
  • 🍫 Often has fruity or floral notes
  • 📉 Lower caffeine than robusta
  • ⭐ Accounts for ~60–70% of global coffee

Common origins: Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil

2) Robusta coffee

Coffea canephora

  • 🌱 Hardier plant (grows in hotter, lower altitudes)
  • ☕ Strong, bitter, earthy taste
  • ⚡ Higher caffeine content (helps plants resist pests)
  • 💪 Often used in espresso blends and instant coffee
  • 📈 Cheaper and easier to produce

Common origins: Vietnam, Brazil, West Africa

🌎 Other lesser-known varieties

3) Liberica

Coffea liberica

  • 🌳 Larger beans and trees
  • 🔥 Smoky, woody flavor
  • 🇵🇭 Popular in the Philippines and parts of Southeast Asia

4) Excelsa (now classified under Liberica group)

Coffea excelsa

  • 🍒 Fruity, tart, and complex taste
  • 🔄 Often blended to enhance flavor depth

☕ Popular coffee types (what you drink in cafés)

These are made from the beans above, not separate species:

  • Espresso (strong concentrated coffee)
  • Americano (espresso + hot water)
  • Cappuccino (espresso + milk foam)
  • Latte (milk-heavy coffee)
  • Cold brew (slow-steeped in cold water)
  • Turkish coffee (finely ground, unfiltered)

🧠 Quick summary

  • Coffee originated in Ethiopia
  • Spread through Yemen → Middle East → Europe → world
  • Main species:
    • Arabica (smooth, high quality)
    • Robusta (strong, high caffeine)
    • Liberica & Excelsa (rare, specialty)
