Perm rods are small cylindrical tools used to shape hair during a perm (permanent wave). Hair is wrapped around them and then treated with a chemical solution that resets the hair’s structure—this process is part of what’s called a Perm.
What they look like
- Plastic rods in different colors and sizes
- Each size creates a different curl type (tight coils → loose waves)
- Usually have a rubber band or clip to hold hair in place
Types of perm rods
- Small rods → tight, spiral curls
- Medium rods → defined curls
- Large rods → loose waves or body
- Flexi rods → bendable, no pins needed
- Spiral rods → long, corkscrew curls
How they’re used
- Hair is sectioned
- Each section is wrapped around a rod
- A chemical solution is applied to break and reset hair bonds
- Hair is neutralized and the rods are removed
Things to keep in mind
- The rod size determines the final curl, not just the product
- Tight rods can make hair look much shorter after the perm
- Incorrect use can lead to uneven curls or damage
