Exploring the 10 Metoprolol Side Effects That Are Often Overlooked in Conversations

Posted on July 17, 2026 by Admin

Metoprolol is a prescription medication called a beta blocker. It is commonly used to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), certain abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure (specific forms), and after a heart attack. It has been well studied and can significantly reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events in people who need it.

Like all medications, it can cause side effects. Some are common, while others are less common but important to recognize.

10 side effects that people may not always expect

  1. Fatigue or low energy
    • One of the most common side effects, especially when starting the medication or after a dose increase.
  2. Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
    • Metoprolol lowers the heart rate. If it becomes too slow, it can cause dizziness, fainting, or weakness.
  3. Dizziness or lightheadedness
    • Especially when standing up quickly, due to lowered blood pressure.
  4. Cold hands and feet
    • Reduced blood flow to the extremities can make them feel cool.
  5. Reduced exercise tolerance
    • Because the medication limits how much the heart rate rises during activity, exercise may feel more difficult.
  6. Sleep disturbances or vivid dreams
    • Some people report insomnia or unusually vivid dreams, though not everyone experiences this.
  7. Mood changes
    • Depression has been reported by some people, but the evidence that metoprolol directly causes depression is mixed.
  8. Sexual side effects
    • Some people experience reduced libido or erectile dysfunction, although many other factors can also contribute.
  9. Digestive symptoms
    • Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach discomfort can occur.
  10. Masking symptoms of low blood sugar
  • In people with diabetes, metoprolol can make it harder to notice warning signs of hypoglycemia, such as a rapid heartbeat. Sweating may still occur.

Rare but serious side effects

Seek prompt medical attention if you develop:

  • Fainting or severe dizziness
  • Very slow heartbeat
  • Worsening shortness of breath or wheezing (particularly if you have asthma or another lung condition)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue (possible allergic reaction)

Important points

  • Do not stop metoprolol suddenly. Abruptly stopping it can increase the risk of chest pain, heart attack, or dangerous heart rhythm problems. If it needs to be stopped, your healthcare professional will usually recommend tapering the dose gradually.
  • If side effects are bothersome, don’t stop the medication on your own. Your clinician may be able to adjust the dose, change the timing, or switch to a different medication if appropriate.

If you’re taking metoprolol, tell me:

  • Your dose (for example, 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg),
  • Whether it’s metoprolol tartrate or metoprolol succinate (if you know),
  • And what symptoms you’re experiencing.

I can help explain whether they are known side effects and what to discuss with your healthcare professional.
