How to Clean Dirty Pillows So They Look Fresh and Smell Clean Again
Over time, pillows can collect sweat, body oils, dust, and odors. The best cleaning method depends on the pillow filling (down, feather, polyester, memory foam, etc.), so always check the care label first.
For washable pillows (many polyester, cotton, and some down pillows)
You’ll need:
- Mild laundry detergent
- Baking soda (optional, for odors)
- White vinegar (optional, for freshness)
Steps:
- Check the label
- Confirm the pillow is machine washable.
- Wash two pillows at a time
- This helps keep the washing machine balanced.
- Use warm water if the label allows.
- Add detergent
- Use a normal amount of mild detergent.
- For odors, you can add a small amount of baking soda during the wash.
- Run an extra rinse cycle
- Helps remove leftover detergent that can make pillows feel stiff.
- Dry completely
- Drying is important to prevent mildew.
- Use a dryer on a suitable setting if allowed.
- Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff pillows.
For memory foam pillows
- Do not put them in the washing machine.
- Remove and wash the cover.
- Spot-clean the foam with mild soap and water.
- Allow it to air-dry completely before use.
To keep pillows fresher longer:
- Use washable pillow protectors.
- Wash pillowcases regularly.
- Air out pillows occasionally.
- Replace pillows when they no longer support your head and neck.
Important:
If a pillow has mold, a strong musty smell that won’t go away, or visible contamination, cleaning may not be enough and replacement may be safer.
A “white and sweet-smelling” pillow usually comes from removing oils and buildup plus thorough drying, not from a single magic ingredient.
