5 Signs of a Mini Stroke (TIA) in Older Adults

A mini stroke, medically called a transient ischemic attack (TIA), happens when blood flow to part of the brain is briefly interrupted. Symptoms may last only minutes or hours and then disappear, but a TIA can be a warning sign of a possible future stroke and should be taken seriously.

1. Sudden weakness or numbness

  • Weakness, tingling, or numbness in the face, arm, or leg
  • Often affects one side of the body

2. Trouble speaking or understanding speech

  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty finding words
  • Confusion or trouble understanding others

3. Sudden vision problems

  • Blurred or lost vision in one or both eyes
  • Double vision
  • Temporary vision loss

4. Dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination problems

  • Sudden trouble walking
  • Feeling unsteady
  • Loss of coordination

5. Sudden severe headache or unusual symptoms

  • A sudden, intense headache—especially if different from usual—can be a warning sign.
  • Some people may also experience confusion or difficulty with normal activities.

Remember FAST:

  • F — Face: Does one side of the face droop?
  • A — Arms: Is one arm weak or numb?
  • S — Speech: Is speech strange or difficult?
  • T — Time: Call emergency services immediately if these signs appear.

Even if symptoms disappear, a TIA still needs medical evaluation because treatment can reduce the risk of a major stroke.

Seek emergency help immediately for:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Trouble speaking
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • A sudden, severe headache

Early recognition and treatment can make a major difference in preventing a serious stroke.
