A Month Before a Heart Attack: 6 Possible Warning Signs to Pay Attention To

The idea that your body always gives a clear warning one month before a heart attack is not accurate—some heart attacks happen suddenly with little or no warning. However, some people do experience symptoms in the days or weeks before a heart attack, and recognizing them can be important.

1. Unusual fatigue

  • Feeling extremely tired without a clear reason
  • Having less energy during normal activities
  • Fatigue that is new or different from your usual pattern

2. Chest discomfort or pressure

  • Pressure, squeezing, fullness, or burning in the chest
  • Discomfort that comes and goes, especially with activity

3. Shortness of breath

  • Trouble breathing during normal activities
  • Breathlessness that seems unusual for you
  • It may occur with or without chest discomfort

4. Pain or discomfort in other areas

Heart-related discomfort can sometimes spread to:

  • One or both arms
  • Shoulder
  • Neck
  • Jaw
  • Back
  • Upper abdomen

5. Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting

These symptoms may occur when the heart is not pumping effectively or when blood flow is affected.

6. Sweating, nausea, or indigestion-like symptoms

Some people—especially women, older adults, and people with diabetes—may experience:

  • Cold sweating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unusual indigestion or stomach discomfort

Call emergency services immediately if you have:

  • Chest pressure or pain lasting more than a few minutes
  • Symptoms that improve and return
  • Shortness of breath with chest discomfort
  • Sudden weakness, fainting, or severe sweating

Reducing heart attack risk

Helpful steps include:

  • Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Not smoking
  • Staying physically active
  • Eating a heart-healthy diet
  • Managing diabetes if present
  • Taking prescribed medications as directed

If you or someone else is having current symptoms, especially chest pressure, breathing difficulty, or pain spreading to the arm/jaw/back, seek emergency help rather than waiting for symptoms to pass.
