Scratches on Glasses: Can a Simple Trick Make Them Disappear?
Many online tips claim that applying a household product will make scratches on eyeglass lenses “disappear instantly,” but this is usually not true. Most scratches are physical damage to the lens coating or material, and they cannot be safely removed at home without changing the lens surface.
Be careful with common “scratch-removal” hacks
People often suggest:
- Toothpaste
- Baking soda
- Glass cleaners
- Abrasive polishes
These can sometimes make lenses look temporarily different, but they may:
- Remove protective coatings
- Create more tiny scratches
- Make vision worse by damaging the lens surface
What you can do instead:
✅ Clean lenses properly
- Rinse with clean water first to remove dust.
- Use a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner.
- Avoid paper towels, tissues, or clothing that can scratch coatings.
✅ For minor scratches
- If the scratch is only on a replaceable coating, an optician may be able to advise whether the lens can be restored or needs replacement.
✅ Prevent future scratches
- Store glasses in a hard case.
- Keep lenses away from keys, coins, and rough surfaces.
- Use both hands when removing glasses to avoid bending the frame.
If scratches are affecting your vision, causing glare, or are in the center of your lenses, replacing the lenses is usually the safest solution.
