The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat (and What May Help)

Having mucus or the feeling of phlegm stuck in your throat is common. It does not always mean you have an infection. The cause can come from the nose, throat, lungs, stomach, or environmental triggers.

Common causes of constant throat mucus

1. Postnasal drip

One of the most common causes is mucus draining from the nose and sinuses into the throat.

Possible triggers:

  • Allergies
  • Colds
  • Sinus irritation
  • Dust, pollen, or smoke exposure

Signs may include:

  • Frequent throat clearing
  • A “lump” feeling in the throat
  • Mucus worse when lying down

2. Acid reflux (including silent reflux)

Stomach acid or stomach contents can irritate the throat even without obvious heartburn.

Possible symptoms:

  • Hoarseness
  • Throat clearing
  • A sour taste
  • Cough, especially at night or after meals

3. Smoking or air pollution

Smoke and irritants can increase mucus production and inflame the airways.

4. Asthma or chronic airway irritation

Some people with asthma or other lung conditions produce extra mucus, especially with:

  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough that lasts a long time

5. Dehydration

When you do not drink enough fluids, mucus can become thicker and harder to clear.

Ways to reduce throat mucus

Stay hydrated

Drinking enough fluids can help thin mucus so it is easier to clear.

Use steam or humidified air

Warm, moist air may help loosen thick mucus for some people.

Rinse the nose if allergies or sinus issues are involved

A saline nasal rinse may help remove irritants and reduce postnasal drip.

Reduce triggers

Try limiting:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Strong fragrances
  • Dust exposure
  • Known allergy triggers

Consider reflux-friendly habits if symptoms fit

Helpful changes may include:

  • Avoiding large meals close to bedtime
  • Limiting foods that trigger reflux symptoms
  • Elevating the head while sleeping if advised

When to get medical advice

See a healthcare professional if mucus:

  • Lasts more than several weeks without improvement
  • Contains blood
  • Comes with unexplained weight loss
  • Is accompanied by chest pain, breathing difficulty, or persistent fever
  • Produces a new or worsening cough

The best treatment depends on the cause—allergy-related mucus, reflux-related throat irritation, and lung-related phlegm require different approaches.
