Carpal tunnel syndrome

Posted on April 20, 2026 by Admin

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where the median nerve gets compressed as it passes through a narrow passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

🧠 What it affects

The median nerve controls:

  • Thumb
  • Index finger
  • Middle finger
  • Half of the ring finger

When it’s compressed, those areas can feel numb, weak, or painful.

⚠️ Common symptoms

Symptoms usually start gradually and often worsen at night:

  • Tingling or “pins and needles” in fingers
  • Numbness in thumb and first 3 fingers
  • Hand weakness (dropping objects)
  • Pain that may extend to the forearm
  • Night-time hand discomfort

🔍 Causes & risk factors

Anything that increases pressure in the wrist can contribute:

  • Repetitive hand movements (typing, assembly work, phone use)
  • Wrist injuries
  • Pregnancy (temporary fluid retention)
  • Diabetes or thyroid problems
  • Arthritis
  • Genetics (smaller carpal tunnel)

🩺 Treatment options

Mild cases:

  • Wrist splints (especially at night)
  • Rest and activity changes
  • Cold packs
  • Anti-inflammatory meds (if advised)

Moderate cases:

  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections

Severe cases:

  • Surgery to release pressure on the nerve (carpal tunnel release)

⏱️ When to see a doctor

Get checked if:

  • Numbness lasts more than a few weeks
  • Weak grip starts developing
  • Symptoms interfere with sleep or daily tasks

💡 Simple prevention tips

  • Keep wrists straight while typing
  • Take frequent breaks from repetitive tasks
  • Avoid prolonged bending of the wrist
  • Use ergonomic keyboards/mouse if needed

If you want, I can tell you how to test for it at home, or how to relieve symptoms in 5–10 minutes using simple exercises.
