You can retain up to 2.5 kg of fluid per day. Here’s how to get rid of excess fluids.

That claim needs a bit of correction first—your body doesn’t typically retain up to 2.5 kg of fluid per day under normal conditions. Daily weight can fluctuate by 0.5–2 kg due to water balance, food intake, salt, hormones, and hydration levels, but large or persistent fluid retention (edema) usually has a specific cause.

If you’re dealing with excess fluid retention, here are practical, evidence-based ways to reduce it:

1. Cut back on sodium (salt)
High sodium intake makes your body hold onto water. Processed foods, packaged snacks, and restaurant meals are common culprits. Cooking fresh meals and checking labels helps a lot.

2. Stay well hydrated
It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking enough water signals your body to release stored fluid instead of holding onto it.

3. Increase potassium intake
Potassium helps balance sodium levels. Foods like bananas, spinach, potatoes, and yogurt can support fluid balance.

4. Move your body
Physical activity improves circulation and helps prevent fluid from pooling, especially in the legs and feet.

5. Elevate swollen areas
If your ankles or legs are swollen, raising them above heart level for a while can help fluid drain.

6. Compression (if needed)
Compression socks can help reduce swelling, especially if you sit or stand for long periods.

7. Watch carbs and alcohol
High carbohydrate intake increases glycogen stores, which bind water. Alcohol can also disrupt fluid balance and cause temporary retention.

8. Check medications and hormones
Certain medications and hormonal changes (like during menstrual cycles) can cause water retention.

When to take it seriously
If swelling is:

  • Persistent or worsening
  • Only on one side
  • Accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, or fatigue

…it could be linked to heart, kidney, or liver issues, and you should seek medical advice.

If you want, tell me your symptoms (where the swelling is, when it happens, diet, etc.), and I can help narrow down the likely cause.
