5 Diabetes Symptoms That May Appear at Night

Diabetes can sometimes cause symptoms that are more noticeable during the night. These signs are not proof of diabetes on their own, but if they are frequent or occur together, they are worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

1. Frequent nighttime urination

High blood sugar can cause the kidneys to remove extra glucose through urine, which may lead to:

  • Waking up several times to urinate
  • Increased urine volume

2. Excessive thirst at night

Losing more fluids through urination can lead to:

  • Dry mouth
  • Strong thirst
  • Needing water during the night

3. Night sweats or sudden sweating

Some people with diabetes experience sweating episodes, especially if blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), which can happen overnight in people taking certain diabetes medications or insulin.

4. Tingling, burning, or numbness in the feet

Diabetes-related nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can cause:

  • Burning sensations
  • Pins-and-needles feelings
  • Pain that is worse at night

5. Sleep problems and unusual fatigue

Blood sugar changes may contribute to:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling tired despite getting enough sleep

Other possible signs of diabetes include:

  • Increased hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing cuts or wounds
  • Frequent infections

When to get checked

A healthcare professional can diagnose diabetes with blood tests such as:

  • Fasting blood glucose
  • HbA1c (a measure of average blood sugar over time)

Seek medical advice if symptoms are persistent, worsening, or accompanied by very high thirst, vomiting, confusion, or severe weakness.

Early detection and treatment can greatly reduce the risk of complications.
