Bleach stains on your clothes? No need to throw them away: here’s the solution

Bleach Stains on Clothes? Here’s What You Can Do

Bleach stains are tricky because chlorine bleach usually removes the fabric’s dye rather than leaving a normal stain. That means you often cannot “wash out” a bleach mark—but you may be able to hide, recolor, or repurpose the garment.

1. Use a fabric dye

  • If the clothing is still in good condition, dyeing it a darker color can help cover bleach spots.
  • Choose a dye suitable for the fabric type (cotton, polyester, blends, etc.).

2. Try a fabric marker

  • For small bleach spots, a fabric marker close to the original color can make the mark much less noticeable.
  • Test the color on an inside seam first.

3. Turn the stain into a design

  • Create a tie-dye or bleach-style pattern (on suitable fabrics) so the marks look intentional.
  • Add patches, embroidery, or decorative designs.

4. Reuse the fabric

  • If the stain is large, consider turning the item into cleaning cloths, a tote bag, or another craft project.

Important:

  • Do not mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners—dangerous fumes can be produced.
  • Rinse bleach-exposed clothing thoroughly before attempting any repair.
  • Always check the care label before dyeing.

A bleach spot is often permanent, but the clothing may still be saved with a little creativity.
