How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

Posted on March 30, 2026 by Admin

If you’re dealing with inner ear crystals, medically known as canaliths or otoconia, they can cause Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)—a common cause of dizziness and spinning sensations. You cannot “dissolve” the crystals, but you can reposition them safely to reduce vertigo. Here’s a detailed guide:

1. Understanding the Problem

  • Inner ear crystals normally help with balance.
  • When they become dislodged into the semicircular canals, they trigger sudden vertigo with head movements, nausea, or imbalance.

2. Effective Maneuvers to Reposition Crystals

a) Epley Maneuver

  • Purpose: Moves the crystals back to the utricle where they won’t cause vertigo.
  • Steps (right ear example):
    1. Sit upright on a bed. Turn your head 45° to the right.
    2. Lie back quickly so your shoulders are on the bed, head slightly tilted back. Hold 30–60 seconds.
    3. Turn your head 90° to the left without lifting it. Hold 30–60 seconds.
    4. Turn your body 90° to the left (head now facing down). Hold 30–60 seconds.
    5. Sit up slowly.
  • Repeat 1–3 times daily until symptoms improve.

b) Semont Maneuver

  • Rapid side-to-side movement to shift crystals. Often used for specific BPPV cases.

c) Brandt-Daroff Exercises

  • Helps the brain adapt to vertigo over time.
  • Steps:
    1. Sit on the edge of a bed.
    2. Lie quickly on one side with nose pointing up at a 45° angle.
    3. Stay 30 seconds, then sit up.
    4. Repeat on the other side.
    5. Do 10 repetitions, 2–3 times daily.

3. Supportive Home Measures

  • Move slowly when changing positions to avoid triggering vertigo.
  • Stay hydrated; dehydration can worsen dizziness.
  • Use ginger tea for nausea relief.
  • Avoid sleeping on the affected side immediately after maneuvers unless advised.

4. When to See a Doctor

  • Vertigo persists despite home maneuvers.
  • Accompanied by hearing loss, tinnitus, severe nausea, or neurological symptoms.
  • Recurrent vertigo that impacts daily life.

⚠️ BPPV is common and usually treatable with maneuvers, but always confirm with a doctor or ENT before trying maneuvers if you have other ear or neurological issues.

I can make a step-by-step illustrated guide for the Epley and Brandt-Daroff exercises so you can safely do them at home.

Do you want me to make that guide?
