I poured white vinegar into my toilet tank and left it overnight for the first time in 15 years. This is what happened.

The idea of pouring white vinegar into a toilet tank overnight is a popular cleaning hack. What happens depends on the condition of the toilet and the amount of vinegar used.

What vinegar may do

✅ Help loosen mineral deposits

  • White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help dissolve some hard water scale, calcium deposits, and mineral buildup inside the tank and around components.

✅ Reduce some odors

  • Vinegar can help neutralize certain smells.

✅ Clean light grime

  • It may help with some residue on tank surfaces.

What it probably won’t do

❌ It will not “restore” an old toilet to brand-new condition.
❌ It won’t remove all stains, especially deep rust or long-standing mineral buildup.
❌ It is not a substitute for replacing worn parts like a faulty flapper, fill valve, or seals.

Possible concerns

  • Leaving acidic cleaners in contact with rubber or plastic parts for long periods repeatedly may shorten the life of some components.
  • Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach or chlorine-based cleaners. The combination can create dangerous fumes.

A safer approach

  1. Turn off the toilet’s water supply.
  2. Flush to lower the water level in the tank.
  3. Add vinegar and let it sit for a few hours (not necessarily overnight every time).
  4. Gently scrub accessible areas if needed.
  5. Turn the water back on and flush.

For regular toilet maintenance, occasional cleaning plus checking the tank parts is usually more effective than relying on a single “miracle” treatment.
